Strongmen

the World Over

CURRENT TOPICS:-Sweeping victory of our U.S.A. strength stars, scoring decisive wins in 6 out of the 7 weight classes, was unsurpassed at the Pan-American Games. 100 lbs. more than his own bantamweight bodyweight. The historymaking total Kono established last October at Vienna was erased from the record books by this superman's 9642 aggregate at Mexico City. Charlotte MacGibbon's shapely, welldeveloped figure personifies the grace and symmetry of athletic beauty. Time and again she has won honors in track and field events, including the British Empire Games title in the javelin throw. Weight training exercise has long played an important role in her athletic success. Like many other prominent Australian champions, Miss MacGibbon trains at Frank Findlay's elaborate, ultra-modern gymnasium in Melbourne.

Body building fans of a generation ago were inspired by the physical impressiveness of this trio of strongman athletes. Charles MacMahon, Henry Sincowski and Antone Matysek (1. to r.) achieved fame and admiration comparable with our present-day Mr. America winners. This souvenir of yesteryear illustrates the enduring qualities of a superman masterpiece.

Here's convincing evidence that Arnold Snell is as rugged as he looks. Smashing sturdy wooden box tops with a bare fist, in the spectacular fashion of a Karate expert, readily demonstrates his. superman power and durability. Another of the impressive feats of Tacoma's Northwest Hercules is cleaning an 85-pound dumbell gripped by the middle finger of one hand and then pressing it overhead. (Photos by Shirlie Montgomery)
